Duties:

  1. Be in hospital by 7AM. If running late unexpectedly connect with APP or physician colleague to cover your patients until you've arrived.

  2. Turn on Pager (or Spok Mobile) to Available, and turn on Secure Chat (as of 7 AM)

  3. Review patient list and divide patients with APP (if one is paired with you)

  4. Pre-round

  5. Round on patients, orders, call consults, etc. Dc sums need to be entered w/in 48h.

  6. Call into Care Team rounds

  7. Run the list with APP in AM

  8. Follow up on consults, procedures, images, etc.

  9. In very rare circumstances when admitter volume is extremely high and unsafe, Triage may ask you to do an admission (see above for day of the week).

  10. Run the list with APP in PM

  11. Update Handoff tabs for cross-coverage. Perform warm handoff is pt decompensating at time of shift change.

  12. Turn off Pager & Secure Chat when shift is over (5PM or 7PM).

  13. At end of rotation (Monday) create shared dc sums for pts on HD3 or longer, and update Weekly Summary in Handoff tab

Geographic Placement

This process is in flux. Ideally most of your patients are on 1-2 units, but some teams have better geo placement than others.

Special circumstances

  1. If you are paired with an acting intern or a medical student on an elective, see this folder: https://uwmadison.box.com/s/e9qoqr8609sk1dogx7f1pdalcya4ojct. You should also receive an email from the education team regarding instructions, expectations, and evaluation of the medical student.

  2. If you are paired with a resident on an elective, expect some guidelines from the Residency program regarding expectations, schedule and evaluation.
